The robot perceives conditions and selects actions through software without moment-to-moment human commands. The engineering challenge shifts toward perception, planning, adaptation and reliability.

Autonomy is not simply the absence of a controller. It is the presence of machine decision-making under pressure.

Why the distinction matters

Clear labels help audiences compare like with like. Future formats may also combine both approaches, using autonomous phases, operator interventions or shared-control rules.
